

Martin L. Carpenter is a native of Los Angeles
County. After being honorably discharged from the United States Navy in 1969,
Mr. Carpenter attended the University of California at Los Angeles, where he
received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973. He then pursued his legal
education at Southwestern University.
As a staff writer on the
Southwestern Law Review, Mr. Carpenter co-authored an article on insurance bad
faith in 1975, which has been cited by the California and South Dakota Supreme
Courts for the proposition that in each contract there exists an implied
covenant of good faith and fair dealing. At Southwestern Mr. Carpenter earned a
position as an Associate Editor of the Law Review. He graduated in 1976 with his
Juris Doctor, and was admitted to the practice of law in the State of California
and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California in December
of the same year.
Additionally, Mr. Carpenter is admitted to practice
before the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Northern, and Southern
Districts of California; the United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit; and
the United States Supreme Court. He is an arbitrator with the American
Arbitration Association and Los Angeles Superior Court. He also sits as a
Temporary Judge for the Superior Court in limited jurisdiction cases. He has
received recognition from the Los Angeles Superior Court for his volunteer
service as a mediator through the ADR Program.
Mr. Carpenter has devoted
his professional life to developing and applying the skills of a civil trial
attorney. He represents private individuals, corporations, businesses and public
entities in the areas of personal injury, products liability, contracts, civil
rights violations, discrimination, wrongful termination, defamation, and police
excessive force. His published decision in Rodriguez v. Inglewood Unified School
District (1986) 186 Cal.App.3d 707 is an often cited authority in educational
law.
Professional associations are: American Bar Association, Los Angeles
County Bar Association, Association of Southern California Defense Counsel and
Southwestern Alumni Association. He is also a member of the U.C.L.A. Alumni
Association and the Bruin Bench.
Marty married his wife, Catherine in
July of 1973, after their graduation from U.C.L.A. and just before they both
entered law school. Catherine is a Professor of Criminal Law at Southwestern.
She is very active with the ABA Legal Education Division and serves as an
educational consultant to colleges and universities across the nation.
